The purpose of this research is to explore the possibility of using Long Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN) to localize objects or people both indoors and outdoors. Such system can help accurately locate elders, possibly Alzheimer's patients, remotely or can provide geo-locational context for smart objects.

There are many limitations of localization technologies today. Most of them requires multiple WiFi access points that are unavailable in most of the domestics. They are also power inefficient, and GPS are inaccurate for indoors positioning.

LoRa is a type of wireless telecommunications network that is designed to communicate small bits of data over a long range using low power. Today, it is commonly used to develop Internet of Things. The exciting opportunity lies in the fact that unlike today's mobile devices, power used by LoRa is so small that it can last years simply on a watch battery while delivering data over a few miles. It can also be designed to be small in size so that it can permeate through people's surroundings. It is implied that multiple LoRa's are required, but they are affordable and would likely require one hub to collect and process data.

The research will first start with localization using RSSI fingerprinting technique. RSSI values will be measured and clustered over a range of distances. RSSI values will be collected by multiple (minimum 3 for 2D localization) LoRa receivers to process the geo-location of the object whose RSSI is measured.
