As a result of the lens, traditional cameras require a degree of thickness, making them inherently a 3-dimensional device. Thus the lens is not only a costly component of the, but also imposes restrictions on its functionality as a result of its shape requirements. A 2-dimensional camera would have a wide-range of applications, for example as a brain implant.

The 2-dimensional camera functions by building on a simpler model: a pinhole camera. A camera with multiple pinholes can acquire the sharpness of a traditional camera while minimizing the time needed to capture the image, which is the classic problem for traditional pinhole cameras. Additional computation is performed to convert the image into a form that is intelligible to humans. For my project, I am working to improve on research that has already been done on this 2D camera: specifically, a camera that is not only flat but also flexible. For example, a camera that could be wrapped around a pencil. The goal of my research is to perform the calculations needed to prove properties of this camera system: whether the system is linear and invertible, etc. Ultimately, if these results show promise, a prototype will be built, using flexible electronics.
